Rio Vermelho
Rio Vermelho is Salvador's bohemian food and nightlife district — best for travellers who plan their days around dinner and live music.

Rio Vermelho is where Salvador eats and goes out. Largo da Mariquita and the surrounding streets concentrate bars, restaurants, acarajé stands and live music, and the neighbourhood keeps a bohemian, urban character rather than a resort one. The trade-off: the beaches here are not the ones you swim at.
- Best for: food-led trips, nightlife, repeat visitors, solo travellers who want life on the street.
- Also here: Casa do Rio Vermelho, the former home of Jorge Amado and Zélia Gattai.
- Nights run late; choose a room away from the busiest corners if you are a light sleeper.
